Residents are being offered the opportunity to explore some of the rich heritage of Blackpool next month as part of the national Heritage Open Days.

This year’s events have been co-ordinated by Blackpool Council in partnership with the Blackpool Civic Trust.

Venues around the town, many of which are normally closed to the public, will throw open their doors to welcome visitors, with guided tours and information available.

New for this year will be tours of the Blackpool Magic Club, and a fantastic chance to ride a hop-on hop-off heritage bus around a number of the sites. Take a tour around usually unseen areas of famous attractions including Winter Gardens, Pleasure Beach Tower and the Grand Theatre or take the chance to get more off the beaten track with tours of Marton Little Mill and Cocker Tower in Stanley Park.

Alternatively, find out more about Blackpool’s natural assets and with guided tours of Marton Mere and Salisbury Woodland Gardens or discover some of the town’s historic religious building, with opportunities to tour the synagogue as well as a number of the town’s historic churches.

There will even a chance to get a last look at the council’s Illuminations department in Rigby Road before they move out to new premises or to discover more about your own family history at Central Library.

Elaine Smith, Chairman of the Blackpool Civic Trust, said: “The Blackpool Civic Trust has hosted these open days for 17 years and is delighted at Blackpool Council’s input, adding extra chances for the public to see Blackpool’s hidden gems – and there are a terrific number of them in this town.

“The programme this year offers something for all from traditional tours of popular architectural gems to a showcase of some of the more hidden heritage of the town.

"I hope as many people as possible will take the opportunity to come and discover some of the town’s terrific history and enjoy a free and totally enthralling journey through Blackpool's past.”

Councillor Tony Williams, Cabinet Member for Culture and Communities, said: "The heritage of Blackpool as the world's first working class seaside resort is of great significance and many of the buildings in the town reflect this proud history.

"Heritage Open Days have grown in stature in the town in recent years as we look to celebrate some of our truly unique and beautiful historical assets.“ The free openings will take place on four days from Thursday 11 – Sunday 14 September - some are on a just turn up basis, but for others places are limited and tickets must be booked in advance by calling (01253) 478436/478032 and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

A full list of events can be found at www.blackpool.gov.uk or pick up a brochure from the Tourist Information Centre or Council offices.
