Watford boss Boothroyd: 'We're making some absolute howlers'

A fuming Aidy Boothroyd said he didn’t “particularly want to pick” his players up after watching them lead Blackpool three times yet incredibly lose 4-3 at Vicarage Road this afternoon.

“Again great entertainment for you fellas [the press] I would imagine, and the neutral, but you score three goals at home you win the game – you score three goals anywhere you win the game.

Asked what he said to the players after the loss, the Watford boss responded: “That’s private and what I say tomorrow morning when we’re in will be private as well.

“The bottom line obviously is our attacking play is terrific and we’re scoring goals and we’re making lots of goals and the two front players were wonderful today.

"But we’re making silly individual errors and you can work as much as you want on the training pitch, but these are the same players that have got promotions at other clubs and at this club. At this moment in time, for whatever reason, there’s some absolute howlers taking place.”

There maybe trouble ahead!Great entertainment today but if you score 3 at home you don't lose unless you have a clown running the show and a few on the pitch.

sorry fellas but i gotta have a moan. Lloyd Doyley, not good enough in any department, ryman standard. jay demerit, headless chicken, no positional awareness, good coca cola 1 level. Darren Ward, average journeyman, too quiet for a man in his pivotal position and experience, average coca cola 1 player. Matt Sadler, poor distribution and painfully slow, lack of pace would be exposed at any level. Richard Lee, worst keeper since Sherwood, good keepers command the box, Lee doesnt even command the goal line, his hesitancy is causing panic to the whole 'defensive' unit. Is it any wonder teams are attacking us in our own back yard? average sides like Plymouth, Blackpool, Cardiff and even Wolves that used to come for a point, now see us as easy pickings. We started the season with a new hymn sheet and played some decent football with both full backs regularly recieving the ball to feet from Poom. Slowly but surely, game by game, we have morphed back into the shambles we ended last season as. How many times did Doyley or Sadler show for Lee. We have got a 6 foot plus striker in (Rasiak) and have reverted to that horrendous hoofball of last season. Why has Bromby not been given a go at right back? A position that he was originally signed for. Harley (slower than Sadler) in ahead of McAnuff?? Disgraceful!! Thats ok if your away from home and looking to keep it tight, but at home to Blackpool? O'toole ahead of Willo? If we can get a couple of million for that run of the mill work horse then bite the geordies hands off for it. I give up, im depressed just thinking about it. Its not all doom though, theres a pretty girl who regularly sits near me this season.

WFC4ever, Watford says...
8:42am Sun 2 Nov 08

TBH though is McAnuff any good apart from having a bit of pace?

I doubt Bromby would bve any better at RB but maybe worth I go I guess..like you say he probably couldn't do any worse.

Did Rasiak actually win anything in the air apart from his goal?

The biggest howler anyone at Watford has made is not sacking Boothroyd last November.

He is a useless, worthless manager and we are heading down to League 1.

I am sick of Clappers who constantly say that we'll come good, or that it's not the manager's fault. The bloke is full of spin, full of false optimism, and full of a few other things.

Boot him out, Get Jackett or Billy Davies in (or even my gran) and get some shape and belief in the team.

Bothroyd said last season that, if he thought he'd lost the dressing room, he'd resign. What more evidence does he need?

midland hornet, Stratford says...

Boothroyd states that we are not far away from a winning run. I will say it again since nov 07 47 league games played only 12 wins. If we fall into league 1 with our financial crisis then we will end up like Bradford. A new voice in the changing room is required now before the task of turning results around is to late

Whilst I understand that AB will be the scapegoat why are people not calling for the heady of Malky instead. He is after all the defensive coach.

It was one of the best attacking displays by the front 5 we've seen this season but at the back it was a shambles. Ward and Demerit havn't clicked and as for Lee - well he might have won us the points at St Marys but he's cost us 6 in the last 2 home games.

Malky must fear for his job and yes, ok I concede that AB bought him in but we knocked the ball around to ABs liking upfront but the defence completely panicked when the ball landed at their feet.

Remember people you can't have it all with the full backs - either play them to defend or tell them to forget to defend and let them bomb forward...Let's face it we don't need full backs to get forward - that's why we have wingers.

Up to and including the Wolves match I was enjoying this season. A combination of some good, battling performances, the emergence of Hoskins and O'Toole, some bizarre incidents and a cup run added up to an interesting start to the season to say the least . And despite our lowly league position I was not concerned about relegation, knowing we had players returning from injury and feeling that the manager had regained the touch he showed in his first full season. But now I am not so sure. Certainly too soon to panic and cries of "sack the manager" are premature, but three poor defensive displays are two too many, and three defeats in a row does shake ones confidence. The Blackpool match could be a "season defining" moment , one way or the other. It has happened before that a battling win against the odds has galvanised the team into a table-climbing run, or that a bad defeat has demoralised the team and seen us slump into a long sequence of poor results. Certainly some of the players looked very deflated at the final whistle on Saturday and the individual errors that contributed to the defeat will not have helped to build their confidence in each other. Lee Demerit and Doyley all made dreadful mistakes that led directly to goals. In what frame of mind will they go into the next few games? Tyler should replace Lee till Loach is fit again, and Bromby played at right back. With no negotiations going on with players over new contracts, these results make it a certainty that Smith will leave in January so let us hope that we get a few points on the board before then --if not 30, then maybe 25? And anti-Boothroyd posters--come what may, he will not be here next year, though when and under what circumstances he goes is of course a matter of conjecture.

VoR, Watford says...
1:47pm Sun 2 Nov 08

We have quality players within our squad, it's just that the defences confidence is shot.
I fully expect us to be mid-table by the end of the year and then just missing playoffs because of goal difference come the end of the campaign and a semi-final, maybe final to look forward to.
We are 1 game away of going on an unbeaten run....Starting in Wales.
January will be pivotal to what will be achieved in the end.
Aidy is top notch, only GT has been better.
Great game yesterday.
We'll get it right.

I am fed up.

I am fed up with our defending.

I am fed up with wandering how Sadler has become crap seemingly overnight.

I am fed up with wondering how Richard Lee has become crap seemingly overnight.

I am fed up with wondering why Boothroyd bought Sadler, Bromby, Eustace, last January with a view to them playing in the PREMIER LEAGUE!

I am fed up with wondering why Boothroyd bought Ashikodi, Avinell, Ronaldi, Cavalli, Jarret, Ainsworth, Seanla, Jackson, Ellington, amongst many others that I cannot think off.

I am fed up with wondering why we had £8million ringfenced for a new stand that is now no longer available.

I am fed up with looking at the old main stand.

I am fed up with Simpson's constant spin about "the future is rosy" only to be told later that we have to sell our players in January.

I am fed up with not knowing what's going on.

I am fed up that Boothroyd always says "we have work to do on the training ground".

I am fed up with not knowing the truth about why Keith Burkinshaw left. Funny how our results have dipped since he has gone.

I am fed up with the fact that there is a real chance that we will be in league one next year when we were told that the aim was to be a permanent fixture in the Premier League.

I am fed up with the blokes sitting behind me constantly shouting swear words in my ears, using the 'F' and 'C', words for no reason, during the game. With small children about too.

I am fed up with why our defenders can't pass the ball simply along the floor to another player in the same coloured shirt.

I am fed up with not knowing where all the money has gone from our £60m pay day for promotion to the Premier League and transfers.

I am fed up with why we own the Red Lion and yet we can't get a player or two.

I am fed up with people saying, "oh lets get Ben Foster on loan." Like he would ever come here again.

I am fed up with why Rory Delap's long throws work for Stoke and Bromby's long throws for Watford don't.

I am fed up with wondering where the brick for life is that I paid £50 for. It used to be on a wall in the Rookery stand.

I am fed up with Boothroyd.

I am fed up with Simpson.

I am fed up with Ashton.

I get the feeling I am not the only one.

I think Only 2 Ross Jenkins has summed it up. What is there to enjoy about supporting Watford at the moment? And worst still, there's no light at the end of this very long tunnel.

Roger - if you're starting to voice concern, then things really are bad.

As always, you reason well - however, I cannot agree that it is too soon to do something about the manager.

How long do we leave it? Another month? After Christmas? Let Boothroyd fritter away any pittance we have in January?

This downward trend in terms of results, performances, morale, approach and success has been there for a year now.

If we let it continue, I think there's only one place we'll be in another 12 months - down among the League One backwaters.

The trouble is, we have people running the club whose eyes are only fixed firmly on the exit sign.

However, Boothroyd has had long enough. This isn't a blip - it's the continuation of a long-term malaise.

You can blame the coaches, the players, bad luck or the weather - at the end of the day, the buck stops with the manager.

If we don't change things very quickly, we won't be giving any potential new manager - and ourselves - any chance.

Whats with the call for Jackett? He has managed us and did **** all in div 1. Draw draw draw as I recall. It is early days for him at Milwall and he lost his job at Swansea. For **** sake stop this panic picking anyone with a connection to Watford to be a new manager with no money to change the team we have.

Hornet Cornet, Hornetsville says...
3:15pm Sun 2 Nov 08

Only 2 Ross Jenkins / Vicar Rage,

Agree with you wholeheartedly. In my mind, the only way to force these people running the club to leave is for fans to vote with their feet and wallets, and to stop paying these people's wages.

It sounds radical, but what other way is there? An EGM will change nothing, promises from Boofers are usually lies, and Simpson & co' are not bothered about our club.

I myself halted my company's exec' box last season in protest as the way the club was (and is)being run, I've sent letters of complaint into the club and the only response I got back from Watford Football Club was a 1-line reply which stated "thank you for your continued support".

I mean what sort of business is run in this way? We need to:-

1. Stop going to the Vic and force the owners and management to leave
2. Hope that someone comes in beforehand to take the club over
3. Hope upon hope that something good happens before we're relegated.

I'm not saying AB hasn't made mistakes but some of you blame him for everything that goes wrong regardless of whether it was his fault or not. And you'll be the same people chanting his name if we win the next 4 or 5 games. You are way too fickle.

How was yesterday his fault? Do you actually think he trained Rich Lee to be badly positioned for the 2nd goal? Or told the defence to head a simple ball upwards rather than out when in our box? Or said to JDM run forward to head the ball and make a total hash of it? Or tell the team to watch as 2 Blackpool players get touches in our 6 yard box??

He got the tactics wrong last season, we all cried for change and now he is doing that, we are playing exciting football and scoring goals so that is a success yet how many of you say well done Aidy for that??

I still believe in him.

The mony issues and Ashton and Simpson is a different issue all together and needs to be seperated from our current perfomances and results.

Graham Gimpson, Ricky says...

The biggest howler the club made was awarding Boothroyd an improved contract after we were embarrasingly relegated from the Premiership.

How many businesses reward their staff for failure? Now we have to pay nearly a £1m to get rid of this one-season wonder.

Guess it all comes back to the good governence and transparency the club's former FD, Steve Simmons, was talking about when he critised the make-up of the current board.

I know the WO rolled over and paid up but did the club ever issue Mr Simmons with a writ? No they didn't.

Btw - Juande Ramos was sacked for 3 wins in 21.

Boothroyd's last 31 league games have yielded just 5 wins!!

Vicar Rage, Watford says...

Ibon - no I won't be chanting Boothroyd's name. I haven't been for a long time now.

Just the same as I wasn't one of the loons who was still blindly singing 'Vialli Army' when we were beaten by a Stockport team that was already relegated and had a couple of schoolboys in the team during that fateful season.

Shall I tell you how it's his fault? Because he is the flipping manager.

He decides the tactics, shapes the squad, signs the players, picks the team, hires the coaches, gives the teamtalks and draws the big salary.

If we're doing well, he's responsible. But if we're not, he's also responsible.

The facts are there for all to see - we are shipping goals, losing games and have no chance of strengthening the squad.

Boothroyd has shuffled the pack time and time again - and the contents of the pack are all his players. The fact that we've had to sell on some of the crap he signed for over-the-top fees is no-one's fault but his own.

Yep, we can keep the faith, get behind him, stop blaming him - but how much worse and more serious do you need it to get before it is time to do something?

Graham Gimpson, Ricky says...
3:52pm Sun 2 Nov 08

And where has the money gone? Well because of the lack of transparency at the top level we can't account for all the money but he's some outgoings to be getting on with.

£17.7m on Premiership wage bill.
£16.7m on last season's wage bill.
£3.5m on Ellington (we still owe West Brom £1m in September)
£1m to Catalyst, a consultancy firm brought into to do the job Ashton is clearly not up to.
£350k per year - Ashton's salary for three days a week. He works from his £1m home in Bewdley on a Monday and a Friday
£450k per year - Boothroyd's salary
£500k - Simpson's bonus last year
£200k - for a mysterious payment to the Russo termed 'Loss of Office' in the accounts.
£300k a year - to rent the offices in Toplits Lane

I hope Alice Arnold and Graham Sterry of the Supporters Trust will go over the next set of accounts with a fine tooth comb but I very much doubt it. They will be invited for a meeting at the crumbling Vic with Simpson and Ashton, tell the fans that the contents of the meeting remain confidential, be hopelessly sucked in by the club spin and then report to all its members that the club is being prudent. Oh - but they might get a signed shirt out of their meeting.

To say that i am feeling low with all the spin that is coming out of the Vic is an understatement. The fans have been patient, but now surely is the time that we demand to know exactly how bad things are behind the scenes. We have a ground that is fit for League 1 at best with no hope of sorting out the main stand. We owe 4 million quid in january, so please Simpson tell us of your plans to pay this back if we do not get the money in transfer sales. For the first time i really do feel that we are heading for the football wilderness that is the lower leagues and once we are there i believe we will be there for some time. Very good VoR, the trouble is we have taken WFC to heart for too long to put up with the lack of facts coming out from the club.

In the days of EJ and Plumley there was a lot more honesty and the fans were always kept in the picture, even when the club fell out with the council over the proposed moving/development of the ground after being promised their support and not getting it.

It was a different game in those days, with less at stake than there is today. But there is no need for the club to treat the fans, and even the shareholders, with the contempt they currently do.

There is no way we should have lost yesterday, and something needs to be done. The calls for Aidy to go though are not right. He is being let down by the board as they sell his best players, and plan to sell more. He is being let down by the players, especially our defence, and the coaches must also take some responsibility for this. Also the disunity of us fans does not help. Of course some of the blame must fall on his shoulders. Even he was the sole blame for the team's performance we can't afford to get rid of him, but I think he can bring the good times back if we do not sell our best players. I still think we need a strong assistant, as we had with Keith Burkinshaw as since he left the rot started to set in.

Hexham Hornet accuses the Board of selling Boothroyd's best players. He never had any "best players" except for Marlon King, Darius Henderson and Matt Spring in his first season. King wanted to go, Boothroyd wanted Spring to go, and, yes, the Board wanted Henderson to go. Boothroyd's performance in the market place and his football tactics over the last two and a half seasons have been a disgrace.

Hexham Hornet, HEXHAM says...
9:22am Mon 3 Nov 08

Feff, who brought the players in that you mention? Boothroyd did not want Henderson to go, as you say. The board sold Ashley Young, it was not Boothroyd's idea, and Bouazza went for a price they could not afford to turn down. It would appear that Smith and O'Toole are already agreed sales. I agree that Spring was Boothroyd's choice and it was a mistake, but was he one of our best players?

I know he made some appalling signings as well, but when he signed Ellington not many of us put our hands up in horror - I didn't - because he was a proven stiker and we hoped he could do the same for his career as he did with King. Collins John was a farce, but at least we were not lumbered with him. Jackson, Rinaldi and Cavalli did not work. I think Sadler, Bromby, Hoskins, Williamson and Eustace are not bad additions to the squad.

Feff, Rickmansworth says...
9:52am Mon 3 Nov 08

Hexham - there was no way in which the Board could have stopped the furtherance of Ashley Young's career. I agree that Bouazza went for a good price and I would have sold him for that money too. Ellington's signing, however, I didn't think was sensible. Without Roberts he never performed - and still hasn't. I like Hoskins but AB didn't - he wan't in the team for the whole of last season and for the beginning of this season. Williamson is a good player to have in the squad. However, I think the purchases of Sadler, Bromby and Eustace were ill-advised. Sadly, Smith will go in January - he is easily our classiest player. O'Toole will also go but, again, as with Hoskins, remember AB didn't pick him in early season. Incidentally, why have you not included McAnuff as one of AB's bad buys? I don't think he's that bad a player and I would certainly have him in my team more often than not. For AB he seems to be someone to warm the bench. A big price for a hot-water bottle!

blinded by their ability to not really care, deaf by the sound the stadium creates. (none)

Couldnt agree more with VoR and AB11 .. Alot of fans at Watford are disgracefull and have no heart for the fight. In case anybody hasnt noticed out support, ground, wage bill makes us a mid table championship side at best, this club has continually over achieved and we should be gratefull for what we have experienced over the last 30 years or so. Every now and again a team will get to the premiership and over achieve Reading 2 years ago (back down again) and Hull this year, who will eventually be found out this season or next.
Ok the team is not defending well and action needs to be taken but its not a lost cause yet . If by christmas we are in the relegation zone then lets start worrying but until that happens lets stick together ..
I will give you a prediction for the future, Boothroyd will eventually leave (more then likely because of the fickle, abusive and stupid fans who support Watford), he will then eventually turn into a top manager .. He has given us some great times and what do we do when things get tough, abuse him !! . Anyone who does this should look long and hard at themselves and then not bother turning up at the next home game, positivity needed and endless amounts of support .. come on you orns !!!

We've been on the slide now for months, not just a few weeks. He's got a defence full of players he has signed for sums of money that, in Watford terms, were substantial (Bromby, Sadler etc).

He has some more expensive attacking signings warming the bench (ie McAnuff).

We've had to sell others he's signed because we can't afford to keep them, either financially or in terms of their abject performances.

If he is still in charge after Christmas, and we have any small funds to spare, can we risk allowing him (rather than someone else) to use our last chance of redemption?

And, in the meantime, with ever week that slips by we are giving away points and time for any new manager to make a difference.

I am not someone who goes along to Vicarage Road and boos and abuses - but similarly, I can't see the current trends and just sit back and hope either.

yes they are abusive to Boothroyd and if you cant see that then you live in your own little bubble.
I am and always will be passionate about this club and if some like see negatives I like to be realistic . I couldnt care less if you dont agree with me as mine is just an oppinion like yours, which is supposedly what this site is for...
Vicar rage you are entitled to your opinion and as long as fans dont boo its fine by me. We all see things differently and thats the point of a forum..
As for you AB11 for someone who agreed with some of the points you were making to then say I am a joke for supporting my team through thick and thin is a little bit simple isnt it, just because we dont agree on every point it does not make someone a bad supporter !! ..
I am going to go back to giving my all for the team on the sidelines with positive support, its no wonder they cancelled the forum on the official site with all the negativity on here, What good is that going to do for the club ?...
I wont come onto this site again as I cant be bothered to read some of the drivel and negativity being written, say what you want in reply as it will just be the same thing said in a slightly different way, yawn yawn ... All the best to the real supporters out there ..

1st timer to this site ....
Is it always this friendly on here ?
I was told about this site a while ago and although I have been a WFC fan for over 25 years I have never ventured onto a forum before .. Is it actually worth having an oppinion or will it just be shot down in flames and get abused for having a different oppinion about the club we are all supposed to love. Is there good debates or is it just a slanging match ?
let me know regulars so I can decide whether to bother or not !!
All the best FTT ..

It's not normally this bad Frank!
Just a bunch of people who see something going wrong and disagree about who is to blame. Is it Simpson? Is it Boothroyd? The fans, the players? All of the above. A little transparency from the club would make it a lot clearer.

To my mind we had a not bad game on Saturday for most of the match, which makes it really frustrating. Blackpool were one of the best sides i've seen at the Vic this year and I thought we were good in midfield (with the exception of JJ who did not have a good game) and upfront. Rasiak and Hoskins look great together. Unfortunately, our defence is not on it at the moment and as much as it pains me to say it Richard Lee is really not up to the job. A half way decent goalkeeper would have had all but the first of their goals.

Annoying that we are playing much more entertaining football and then contriving to **** it all up. Only goal difference keeping us out of the relegation zone now - very worried.
